Description: Here is the once in a life-time rare oportunity to get this deck in almost new condition. The Marantz PMD 420 / CP 420 is a portable professional tape recorder which records to audio compact casette tapes. This unit is incresignly rare as Marantz has discontinued to manufacture it years ago.
The tape deck: This deck had a manufacturing defect that prevented the deck from being used. So it is in perfect condition, as now repaired and re-worked. Marantz PMD-420 is analogue recording in a portable format at it's best, when recording to audio cassette tape is the chosen format. The Marantz PMD 420 is easily comparable to it's rival SONY TC-D5. I consider th eMarantz superior as designed later and offers more useful features, such as speed (pitch) and recordign bias adjustments. I found also that the frequency response and signal to noise ratio of the PMD-420 was better than that of the tested D5.
The Microphone Pre-Amp: 0 db, -15 db, -30 db input pad with limmiter. These features come in quite handy when recording live in different environments.
Condition: This deck was not used much in it's life and is very close to when it was new. The heads have literally no wear on them other than running the test tapes I ran to re-align. I repaired the original problem in the DC to DC convertor power supply and then restorred all controls, switches and contacts. The I performed a complete test of all alignments and tweaked where needed. Belts appear good. The deck appears to perform to original specifications. Cleaned batttery spill and physical cleanign and detail work.

Lots: I have 2 decks of the same model aproximately in the same condition. Both decks were fully serviced, come with original packing materilas, box and manuals. The difference between the decks is that the more expensive unit took about double of the work time needed to service, and it has a head with very little wear.
Condition: Both units available here work at optimum and were serviced for reliable performance as close as possible to original specifications; Signs of use such as finer scratches and dings, but are not major, and are only noticed upon insepection: excellent condtion, clean appearance - I will be glad to e-mail detail photos.

This piece of vintage stereo equipment is a quite unique gift to the vintage audio enthusiast: based on the idea to have two speakers for a portable system, where each is not only a speaker, but also includes the functionalty of the whole stereo system. The right hand unit includes the player. The left hand unit includes the system's AC power supply and battery case. This portable 8 track stereo cartridge player is actually quite versitile: It can be operated on AC, on batteries and has a DC input if wanting to use it in a car or boat. When not in use if folds up nicely into a one-piece suit case. The unit is in realy nice near new looking condition. Enjoy your vintage music with style! My estimate is that this unit was made between 1970 and 1972.

Description: This vintage stereo 8 Track Cartrdidge tape player plays either QUADRAPHONIC (Q8) or standard 8 Track STEREO tapes. In quadraphonic mode there are 2 programs with 4 chanels each, or in stereo mode there are 4 stereo programs. In stereo mode the deck sends a duplicate stereo signal to the remaining rear channels and in quadraphonic mode with regular 8 Track stereo tapesm 2 stereo programs can be played at the same time. Quadraphonic players are really quite rare, so grapb this unit before it is gone! Just to mention it: This is the first unit I had in more than 10 years! AND: the heads on this deck show low wear and perform flawlessluy - that is even harder to find! This deck was refurbished to perform reliably for years to come.
Work performed: Cleaned, de-greased and re-lubircated mechanical parts. Cleaned and de-magnetized the head and parts in the tape path. Replaced the drive belt. De-oxydized all controls, contacts and switches with quality contact cleaner. Replaced ALL capacitors in the power supply. The head of this unit has only light wear for top performance. The mechanism of this unit is constructed with a heavey duty AC synchronus motor that handles even difficult tapes well.

Here we have a refurbished and re-worked specimen in excellent condition. This machine has a reliable mechnanism that handles tapes well. The heads are perfect with little wear on them - perfect for recording, or transfer your old tapes to digital! This machine appears have been used modest and in adidtion I re-worked this unit so that it is at it's peak. (see work performed below). This unit was made in Japan for JC Penny with the model number 3331.

Work performed to restore this unit: Repaired; Replaced the belt. I de-oxidised all controls, contacts and switches, Cleaned and de-magnetized the head; re-lubricated mechanical parts. I re-soldered aged solder points in the electronics of this unit - about 80% of all solder points. My detail oriented work took more than 3 hours of labour. Physical cleaning and detail work.
Condition: • Electronics / Mechanical: Repaired / Re-worked (see detail above) The recording and playback quality is perfect: even and nice quality with good and consitent highs highs. • Physical: nice appearance - clean and lush, some minor dings in the wooden case ( corners mainly - not very noticeable). Heads almost no wear, but are in perfect condition.
